I spent much of last year immersed in an imaginary world. I was gripped by the idea for a fantasy novel, a portal adventure full of strange characters and incredible events. I wrote one draft. Then another. Then another. Somewhere along the way, I got lost.
The initial spark of inspiration is like looking from a promontory to a glittering destination. The destination is only an idea, distant and hazy, but you know you can reach it if you just keep going in the right direction.
Writing the first draft feels like wandering the hinterlands. There are signposts for where to go, but they’re written in an unfamiliar language. You’re not sure if the characters you encounter are essential, dangerous, or merely distracting. What path should you take in your wandering?
Revision is a quagmire. It’s not clear whether you’re on solid footing. Maybe you’ll make it across the difficult terrain. Maybe you’ll stay stuck forever.
I’m back at work on my story. I know it won’t be easy to complete my quest. But I’m eager to continue the journey.
Next week on Words of Wonder: More epic words inspired by my novel-in-progress.
For more words, pictures, and adventures check out my new book POETRY COMICS, published by Chronicle Books and available worldwide. You can purchase signed copies at my local independent bookstore, Watermark Books. Here’s one of my favorite pages from the book:
Absolutely love your posts. The last series on reading, the bookshelf, should be made into a poster and offered to libraries , school and public.
So good! I appreciate these perfect summations that capture the spirit of… so much. Of being creative. Of being human. Thanks!
