This reminds me of the Beverly Hillbillies episode where Jed asked Jethro to "cypher" the number of crawdads in a big crate, just to give him something to do. Jethro: "Them noughts, they ain't much by they-selves. But, string a bunch of 'em together, and stick a number in front. They go ta town!"

I was reading in Haig’s latest book (not the best…) that in ancient Egypt, the word nefer was used to represent zero, and it also meant "beautiful, pleasant, and good".
