When I read poetry or a novel, I keep a notebook nearby. A vivid, unusual word will often jump off the page. Sometimes I know what the word means, other times I don’t. I put these words down in a notebook for later reference. This notebook is a treasury, a catalogue, an exclusive dictionary. Maybe these words will fill future pages?
Of course, no word is perfect on its own. Context is as important as sound and meaning. A word longs to be joined with others in lines, sentences, poems, and comic panels. A single word can be a springboard for a new piece of writing.
This is just a handful of perfect words I’ve found. What would you add to the list?
Some perfect words you’ll find in my new book, POETRY COMICS:
jonquil, froth, glimpse, ultraviolet, cloudspotting, off-kilter, moongleam, and indigo.
You can pre-order it now at your favorite local bookstore or all the bookish places online. Thank you for your support!
I love this!
Wow, how nice to read about your notebook! I too have one in which for many years I have been jotting down words I like because of their sound or the figures they create in my head, and they are often unusual words.
I look forward to read "Poetry Comics" also in Italy!
