Come With Me
Before I made Poetry Comics, I wrote poetry.
Gradually, many of these poems found pictures—and lost a few words in the process.
In this month of daily haiku comics, I’ve found echoes of my old poems in new pages.
Come with me
All who seek
The in-between places
Attics and alleyways
Paths of stray cats
Search the forgotten spaces
Ditches and thrift stores
Under bridges and stepping stones
Where secrets are hidden
Follow wind chimes and birdsong
To find unkempt places
Trace the shadows of clouds
That pass overhead
Peer in the windows
Of deserted houses
Brush back the weeds
From headstones long-hidden
Keep looking for something
Still undiscovered
All that you know is
You'll know when you find it
Unusually,
Unimaginably,
Undeniably
Yours.American Goldfinch Identification
Four inches long.
Fits in your palm.
Eats mostly seeds.
Speaks mostly in song.
Cap of black, beak of orange,
Wings tipped with white.
When perched on a flower,
A gem polished bright.
But when it takes flight—
A beam of yellow light.Wildflowers
The best moments arise from nowhere
Blooming in forgotten corners
Pushing up between the cracks
Overgrowing trash-strewn ditches
Bursting into vibrant color
Making brief departures
From this mundane existence
Keeping you constantly
Searching for
Something

Lovely. We have always called peonies “ant-flowers.” It makes me happy you see them too.
Grant, love your poetry and your comics! I resonate with exploring alleyways and the inbetween spaces!
