My God!!! David Hockney is dead! I don't know why that shocks me because he was 88 but I always thinks the most brilliant ones will just be here forever with us
Bravo! I only learned of David Hockney this morning when I read the BBC article about his death and dived in to the link that displayed many of his works. You have recaptured the essense of the paintings I saw there. You even alluded to the mural of the trees that were pieced together of hundreds of smaller portions of that scene ... a triptich on steroids. Grant, you really outdid yourself, taking us all on a delightful ride into this man's work and his influence on you. Thank you.
Nice tribute! He lived and worked, in his latter days, in my neck of the woods, and his enormous “Bigger Trees Near Wharton” was shown at our local art gallery (Ferens Gallery, Hull). It was truly huge, but just made me think of a stage backdrop because of the scale! The documentary you linked is a good one, I saw it when it first came out.
Warter (I spelled it wrong the first time 🤦♀️) is about 30mins from here, on the East Yorkshire wolds. I grew up in the Lincolnshire wolds, a very similar landscape another 30mins away (in the opposite direction). They are rolling chalk hills, with fields separated by hedgerows and coppices, and very distinctive if you know them well. Hockney pulled out so many of the colours we see there in his work. (But I still found the sheer size of that piece off-putting to me somehow 🥴 it’s that ‘art is subjective’ thing.)
I think you captured his unique combination of rigor and joy.
“rigor and joy,” great phrase!
Your art is always a refreshing pause in my inbox💜
Thank you Amy!

Thank you, Sue! I appreciate the note.
Oh to have been alive at the same time as this man!
You're drawings are simple but attractive. That's a great thing for any artist.

Wow, I would love to see both that piece and the natural setting in real life!

Sounds like a beautiful place.
