To celebrate 15 years of drawing Incidental Comics I’m sharing some of my favorite work from the archives. This comic appears in my book THE ART OF LIVING: REFLECTIONS ON MINDFULNESS AND THE OVEREXAMINED LIFE.
Saul Steinberg once said, “Drawing is thinking on paper.”
When I want to do some serious thinking, I take out a pen, paper, and scissors. Slicing through colorful construction paper, I feel like a kid in the art room again.
Cutting and pasting my thoughts makes them feel more manageable. I can tackle big questions: What do I want? What do I need? How can I tell the difference?
THE ART OF LIVING is published by Abrams ComicArts and available in Italian, Spanish, Korean, and Indonesian editions. I’m currently putting the finishing touches on my next book of comics with Abrams—my fourth in the Incidental Comics series! It will be published next Spring.
You can purchase signed copies of all my books from my local independent bookstore, or find them online wherever books are sold.
Insightful as always. These books make great gifts, everyone! I've sent them to friends with kids to appreciate together.
Thank you for showing us this clever way of visualizing dilemmas and problems. It certainly puts everything into perspective when you can see it forming. I really liked this cartoon.
