Autumn ABCs appears in my book POETRY COMICS, recently named a 2024 Good Housekeeping Kids Book Award Winner.

Here’s what the good people of Good Housekeeping said about POETRY COMICS:

An innovative book of more than 50 poems puts almost every line in its own creative comic panel, helping readers visualize the words. Four chapters, one for each season, organize the mostly free-verse poetry into musings about nature (“To a Snail”), fun experiences (“Roller Coaster”) and self-reflection (“Comfort Zone”).

TESTER NOTES: The design of comic panels impressed kid reviewers. “My favorite illustrations were of the poem ‘Carnival,’” said a 10-year old. “The pictures are arranged so it looks like the same girl is on every single seat of a Ferris wheel.”

I hope my book inspires you to create your own poetry comics—whether for yourself or with the young readers in your life. An abecedarian poem about autumn is a great place to start. Warning: It gets tricky once you get to X, Y, and Z…

November is the third annual Poetry Comics Month (as declared by the authority of, um, me). I’ll be posting brand new poetry comics with “Experimentation” as the theme. Making a batch of new work has taken me down some unusual paths that I’m excited (and a bit nervous) to share with you.

Finally: I’ll be presenting about poetry comics next month at the Mazza Museum Weekend Conference and the NCTE Annual Convention—hope to see some of you there!
